· Specific purpose – Is it as a uniform for your staff, a giveaway for clients, a marker for a conference, a saleable item? Be clear about the purpose to make the planning phase easy for the promotional development team.
· Distribution – Clothing can be light, but also bulky, so take that into careful consideration. Think about the way the items will be used; an imprinted cap as a giveaway promotion for instance might be snapped up by the right young audience in a cross promotion with a radio station.
· Theme – to make sure the whole image is taken into account, match the theme to the clothing. A sporty red cap might look good for a racing car team but not fit if your organisations colours are muted blues. Or the theme of a “rev ‘em up” sales conference is mixed up with a subdued theme that plays down the energy required.
· Support Message – Using the example of a sales conference, if the message on the clothing says… XYZ Co Sales Conference 2009 “winners are grinners” as opposed to “Shooting for the stars” one has a stronger message than the other. But it’s going to depend on the overall message being communicated.
· Create a strong link to the organisation – Linking to the organisation's logo, colour scheme design principles, values etc will be important, chat to the promotions team about the best ways to do that.
· Go for value not just a short-term image – Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten. If a giveaway tee shirt is used, make sure it will remain a good memory of the occasion, and a keepsake rather than a duster in the years to come.
